Better Teeth Than George Washington!

On February 22, we celebrated the birth of our very first President of the United States, one of the founding fathers of our country, George Washington. We celebrate his birthday on the third Monday in February each year, on President’s Day. On this day, we honor all presidents, including both Washington and Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday is also in February. I guess somebody sometime decided there were just too many holidays, so they decided to lump a few together to make it more efficient – thus Presidents Day!

George Washington has many things to memorialize him – the Washington Monument, the Quarter in US currency, a state, an island, numerous colleges, countless cities and towns, and more. But one thing you often hear people talk about regarding George Washington were his teeth! You see, a common myth you often hear is that his dentures were made of wood! Can you imagine?

This is actually one of the most enduring myths in American history. The fact is, his dentures were not actually made of wood. This story may have been born because of the fact that his dentures became quite stained over the years and began to take on a very wooden look. But they weren’t really made of wood. During the course of his life, Washington wore several full dentures and partial dentures that were made of bone, hippopotamus ivory, human teeth, brass screws, lead, and gold wire.

Washington was, in fact (and sadly enough), afflicted with dental issues most of his life. Aching teeth, inflamed gums, lost teeth, and poor fitting dentures were all common ailments reported by Washington, a man commonly known for his strength and courage. Historical documents note that he often made purchases for teeth scrapers, denture files and toothache medication – whatever the latest tooth-related innovation was at the time that might help his perpetually aching teeth and mouth. Alas, all to no avail. Dental hygiene was just not what it is today; and, those with poor teeth often suffered even more.

It sounds strange to say, but don’t be like George Washington! You don’t have to endure the same painfully awful dental issues poor George did. With proper dental hygiene, and routine dental visits, you can enjoy a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Brush your teeth twice a day – and always floss your teeth after brushing. See your dentist twice a year for a complete dental examcleaning and x-rays. This unbeatable combination of proactive dental care will do wonders to help you keep your teeth – happy and healthy – for a lifetime.
